Insecurity: Breaking the cycle

NarkSide: Captain’s log – November 28th 2012

Last night I had the pleasure of running into an old schoolmate of mine. He's always been in ridiculous shape, having been a serious sprinter since high school. Last night however, I realized that he'd made the transition from fitness enthusiast to trainer. Awesome, I know. The community can always use additional quality guys. Anyway, he was working with his client outdoors. His shirt was off...and he looked PHENOMENAL.

Honestly, my first thought was: "If he and I were standing shirtless, side-by-side, and a chick was asked to pick one of us, based solely on our physiques...she would pick him without a second thought." A minute of insecurity? Maybe. Maybe it was less than 10 seconds of it. But, it was enough. Immediately, it a made me think of some of the thought processes I've encountered with many of my clients.

Many of them see someone who, their minds tell them, is 'better' than them. And, immediately, they fall into a downward cycle:
  • "Why me?"
  • "Is my girl/guy checking him/her out? Why is he/she with me?"
  • "Why do I even bother coming to the gym? I'll never look like that"
...etc.

I've heard them all, and many more. Truthfully, I've never been able to relate to fully. I'll tell you why: I, personally, believe that comparison, self-evaluation, categorisation, and self-quantifying are natural parts of the human psyche. Further, I believe that acknowledging and embracing such (as opposed to denying, demonising, and battling that moment of comparison) lends a person the ability to move past it.

For me, those couple of seconds led to three distinct thought processes:

1. An honest appraisal of my body-type:
My buddy was always in shape, and will (probably always be in shape). He doesn't watch his diet, and has never needed to. He is pure ecto-meso. Me, on the other hand, I've always been 'softer', even when shredded (which is what I am currently...at sub-8% bodyfat). My body-type is closer to meso-endo. I have to watch what I eat, and I have to keep my activity level high. Standing next to him re-affirmed my life-choices and diet-choices for the past decade.

"What do you mean 'softer' Corey" is one of the things I've gotten a lot of over the years by people who trivialise my thought processes and feelings where my body is concerned. These people have been friends, peers, and/or clients who fall in to one of two camps:

a. People who have never been as lean or as developed as I am/was/will be...ie people who "would be happy" to look the way I do/have/will. (I've actually heard: "if I looked like you, I would [insert sentiment here].")

b. People who are conditioned to try to console.

Either thought process, while positively- intentioned, does nothing to help a person's spiral. And, the latter thought process, brings me back to my initial argument: Society is conditioned to downplay a person's feelings. "Everything will be ok." Cue the pat on the head. However, as stated prior, getting past feelings of insecurity requires the acknowledgement...active acknowledgement.

2. An honest appraisal of where I was physically:
I was carrying 20-30 lbs more muscle than my peer.
Possibly more.I was put together better. Then why would I feel self-conscious?
I'll tell you why:

3. "I can be better."
For some, this thought exists in the back of their minds like poison: slowly seeping into unconscious thought, eroding self-perception, self-esteem, and self-worth. But, do you remember what I said about acknowledging it? Let's bring it to the forefront. I did and, immediately, poison became a positive.

I CAN be better, and will be.

Closing thoughts.
There will always be someone whose very existence challenges your sense of self. The truth of the matter is, you CAN be better. But, and this is the most important part, the person you need to be better than isn't the phantom that you allow your mind to create.

It isn't the guy/girl your significant other thinks is attractive.

It isn't your subordinate, who happens to be more qualified than you on paper.

The person you need to best...is you.

Every day... Every week... Every year, strive to be better than the person you were before.

Life isn't a competition...but if it were, past-you would be the person to beat.

Make it happen.

Whore Mode: Time to get Fucking Fit

NarkSide: Captain’s log – April 28th 2012

Warning: if you’re easily offended (or have woken up this morning with sand in your internet-vagina), this rant is not for your tender eyes cupcake.

/end disclaimer

“I am here to sell pussy…not to talk cunt,” I heard a prostitute say at a strip-club once. (By the way, this rough colloquialism loosely translate to: “I’m here to provide sexual favours…not to waste time with idle bullshit”.)

Whores, ladies of the night, prozzies, prostitutes…or whatever you want to call ‘em – these are some hard-working women. “What’s so hard about spreading your legs Nark?” While I wouldn’t know how to answer that personally (even though I do happen to be a spreader of lady’s legs as well), I can say: it can’t be easy. Come rain or shine, these women are out on the corners plying their trade. Despite the risk of mortality, arrest, and character defamation, these women are finding their butts out there making their quota…no excuses.

“What the hell does that have to do with me Nark?” In my honest opinion? Everything!
How many times have you decided “I’m not going to the gym because of [*insert insignificant, whiny, bitch-assed excuse here*]?”

How many times have you had to re-start a fitness plan because you could not muster the dedication to stick with it?

“I’m a mother so [*insert bullshit excuse that has fuck-all to do with motherhood*].”
If you’re the average gym-goer, I’d fathom that you’ve done either (or maybe all) of the above more times than you can count. If you’re a regular (time-wasting) user of facebook, youtube, and/or twitter, I’d fathom that you’re doing it right fucking now. No time for the gym, but you’re watching videos of laughing babies right now…aren’t you?

Continuing…
Clearly, if what you have been doing thus far fitness-wise hasn’t been working, it MUST be time for a change.

~ ENTER WHORE MODE! ~

On the NarkSide (www.GetNarked.net), we toss the word ‘whore’ around a lot. Much like in this article, we don’t mean it in a derogatory manner. Much to the contrary, we use it as a suffix…attaching the ‘hustling’ mindset to multiple areas of existence. I suggest that you do too: adopt the mentality.
  • Be a cardio-whore: make your aerobic quota.
  • Be a gym-slut: no time for excuses.
Don’t just try to meet your goals. No… I want you to FUCK ‘EM TIL THEIR KNEES GET WEAK, and then move on to the next one.

C’mon… Grow a pair.

Nark's Coconut & Raisin Oatmeal Cookies!

NarkSide: September 16th 2011

Hey all! It's September 16th... 7 days before my birthday. September, for me, is my 'peak month': i.e. the month where I push myself extra hard to be in peak form, so I can celebrate my birthday in my best shape ever. As such, my diet gets extra tight at this time.

If you guys have been following my "Dieting should never be boring" series, you'll know that 'tight', for me, doesn't equate to 'tasteless'.

I thought I'd show you how I get a 'sweet treat' in on night's like tonight when I'm craving something of the sort. Here goes!!!

Ingredients:
  • 6 packets of splenda (or the equivalent in stevia OR 1/2 cup honey)
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup dried coconut
  • 1/2 cup rum
  • 1/2 cup quick oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup multigrain flour (rye, cracked wheat, corn grits, barley flakes, rolled oats, rye malt, sesame seeds, millet)
  • 1 cup vanilla protein powder (Or plain if you prefer a milder taste)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup apple juice
  • Water (as needed to achieve correct consistency)
  • Pam Cooking spray
  • 1 sexy toothpick

Pre-directions:
  • Add rum to raisins... and allow the raisins to soak (covered, and refrigerated) overnight.
Directions:
  1. Drain the Raisins, and save the fluid for later use.
  2. Add all dry ingredients to a bowl and stir evenly.
  3. To the dry ingredients add apple juice, the rum-flavored fluid from the raisins. Stir until evenly mixed. (NB: If the mixture isn't moist enough, add just enough water to achieve the desired consistency.)
  4. Cover the mixture, and let it sit for 20 minutes.
  5. Fold in the raisins by hand, until they are just about evenly distributed.
  6. Next, grease a flat baking pan with cooking spray.
  7. Using a spoon, start dropping the cookie dough onto the baking pan.
  8. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
  9. Place baking pan into oven, and bake cookies at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.
  10. When the 15 minute timer goes off, poke the middle of one of the cookies with a toothpick to assess doneness. The toothpick should come out clean. (NB: should it not be clean, turn the oven off and let the cookies sit in the still-hot oven for 5 minutes more).
  11. Let cookies cool for 10 minutes before removing from baking pan.
  12. Stuff yourself without losing your abs. :-D
Enjoy!
And Happy Birthday to all of your Libras and Virgos out there!
